Access No Restrictions Access Land (CRoW) refers to land where you have a right to roam on foot. In caving, this often means the entrance is located on such land.

  Directions and Parking
----------------------

      About 120 mins walk

     Around 1.19 miles / 1.92 KM

Satnav: Yorkshire Dales Car Park Horton-in-Ribblesdale - Pennine Wy, Settle, BD24 0HG

### Parking

Thankfully, there's a [Yorkshire Dales National Park Car Park](https://maps.app.goo.gl/QTtSocpjfyziSNs68) which has plenty of spaces and even an overflow round the back. It's mainly used for the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, so as you might expect it can get very busy.

There's options to pay on card and there's toilet facilities too and it's got plenty of good reviews on Google Maps.

However if that is full there is an overflow car park, just further down the road. There's a big white sign at the front of the main car park which says overflow over the next 2 bridges on Station Road. It will take about 30 seconds to drive to.

Drive back out onto the main road and you'll come to the first bridge, which curves round to the left, quickly followed by the second bridge. A short distance onwards and there's a wooden gate set between a stone wall on your right hand side. There are even more spaces in here.

### Walking Directions

Walking from the main car park or from the overflow on Station Road, you need to head over to the Crown Hotel, just up the road is Pennine Way, which is a walking path that will take you all the way to the Sell Gill Holes Dry (on the left) and Wet entrances (on the right, slightly further up the hill)

It's a decent walk of just over a mile and it's all uphill, much better on the way down! It starts off smooth, but quickly turns to loose stones with muddy puddles along the way.

 ### Interactive Map

The map shows the walking route and parking spots. You can also download the data in GPX and KML, which you can then import into OS Maps.

  #### Notes

With this being my first proper SRT cave, I was absolutely bricking it on the day and on the first pitch down. It was day 2/2 of the CNCC's fantastic New to SRT course. First day spent in a barn practising SRT and then the second day in a real cave!

With a decent walk up from the pub, which felt like an eternity due to me being nervous we eventually reached the entrance to the dry route, donned our SRT kits and took turns clipping in and walking to the first pitch.

The first pitch was a little tricky in that it's not the easiest to get your descender clipped in due to where you have to sit, but once in I was slowly sliding down the rope. Looking up made for a great view.

The good thing about this cave is that the pitches are all close to each other. The second pitch was a little bit of a step up in terms of depth, but still pretty easy.

A little bit further and we were at the third and final pitch. A 2 step one with 2 small drops. Short but sweet!

Once down, we were told to go explore a bit, so off we went! A lovely cascade on the right garnered everyone's attention, before walking down into a large, spacious cavern, which produced fantastic echoes!

A short walk on and there was a section of fantastic flowstone, which dropped down to a low stream passage. It was at this point that we decided to head back and then try the pitches in reverse.

A foot ascender wasn't in my vocabulary just yet, but finding out that ropes can be pretty difficult to ascend without one, quickly put one on my radar. Luckily, the other people on the trip offered to put some weight on them to make things easier!

The ascent up the entrance pitch was slightly different on the way back. Ian had rigged up a rebelay which was a nice test of the skills we learned on the day before.

I'd like to try the wet route if I ever go back here again, with it being very close and from having a look at the rigging topo, it seems like a bit more of a challenge, especially now that I've done a few more SRT trips.

  SRT Previews
------------

SRT Previews let you see what a pitch looks like before you enter the cave. **They are not rigging guides, and they are not a how-to. Never rely on them for rigging.** Always go with a competent person who knows how to rig a cave. If you need a rigging topo, use the [CNCC guide.](https://cncc.org.uk/cave/sell-gill-holes)

#### First Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 7m

The first pitch is a little different because it's the entrance. It's also outside so visibility should be good too. Depending on how it's rigged, you've got a hand line to clip into for a few meters before you get to the pitch head.

It's a little bit exposed as you can see all the way down basically. I remember getting into position was a little tricky due to having to slide down into the wedge / gap. There's a small piece of metal which you can put your feet on too.

Once you're attached it was fairly easy after that. You might need to stand against the wall and rappel down for some of it. With it being a fairly short pitch, you're down at the bottom in no time.

#### Second Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 12m

The second pitch is a nice little step up from the first, its about 10 - 12 meters down and this time its in the dark too! The approach is fine with plenty of room to clip into to the handline. It's another fairly exposed pitch, as it opens up into a big room. Once attached it's a simple descent.

  [ ![Sell Gill Holes (Dry) - 2nd pitch approach.](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/159/conversions/01M2EA93ZHPM75SV8Y30HGYGB2-thumb.webp) ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/159/conversions/01M2EA93ZHPM75SV8Y30HGYGB2-optimised.webp)

#### Third Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 12m

The Third pitch comes in two parts. A short - probably about 1.5m drop, and then a short walk along a ledge until the second, longer pitch (about 10m).

Another easy pitch. The ledge in-between has ample space for a comfortable switch over and then it's straight down.

On the way up, a foot ascender / pantin helps a lot, otherwise, you'll need to use the pinch the rope with your heels method or have another cave hold the rope down for you, which makes the initial ascent much easier.
