Access No Restrictions Access Land (CRoW) refers to land where you have a right to roam on foot. In caving, this often means the entrance is located on such land.

### Parking

There's plenty of places to park in the very obvious lay-bys. With it being a popular place for walkers, it's advised to get there early. Between 9AM and 9:30AM if you want a decent spot. As you approach, there's a lay-by on your left, I'd keep going and see if you can get a space closer to bridge – just makes for a shorter journey when you set off to the cave. Bring some cash for the burger and ice cream vans. There's no mobile signal whatsoever down there, so no card payments!

### Walking Directions

Runscar 4 is quite close to Thistle 2. If you're parked on the right hand side on the main road, make your way to the centre / middle of the car park / verge and there's a worn path visible in the grass which you can use to make your way over.

You want to walk in near enough a straight line and veer off toward the viaduct when you can see the stone outcrops in the distance. (See the interactive map below) Runscar 4 is more of a hole in the ground type entrance. It takes about 10–15 minutes to walk over. Unfortunately, you can't see the entrance to this one from the car park as its kind of up a small hill.

I've included a picture of the entrance and one of Runscar 3 entrance – If you see this one, you've gone too far and need to turn around!

  Route Descriptions

#### Runscar 4

 [ Print ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/caves/runscar-cave-4/routes/runscar-4/print)

**Runscar Caves** are active stream caves and are prone to flooding, so **dry weather for a few days beforehand and on the day** is essential. Check the forecast before attempting the route.

This is a very short trip. Start by dropping down into the streamway from the **obvious opening**. It’s walking for about **3 minutes** before you reach a section where you need to crouch down. Water levels may start to rise here, and you should expect your **wellies to take in some water over the top**.

After a short spell of crouching, the route drops to crawling. It isn’t long before you can see **daylight**. The exit can be approached on your back, and you can twist yourself round as you work your way out. This is a good spot for a photo if someone has exited before you.

  #### Notes

A really short trip. You'll probably spend longer trying to find it!

Dry weather is needed, there's a crawl section right near the end and a bit of a squeeze to exit, but nothing really exciting. Good for kids though as an introductory cave. I wouldn't come back here, there's nothing really to see and the fact it's so short means your time could be better spent in one of the longer caves such as Roger Kirk instead.
