Yorkshire Dales - Three Peaks / RibbleheadRoger Kirk Cave - Entrance 2
============================

A good cave for novices. Tight-ish squeeze near the entrance (looks worse than it is), a wet crawl through the "tube" and mainly a crawling or crouched over type of trip.

Access No Restrictions Access Land (CRoW) refers to land where you have a right to roam on foot. In caving, this often means the entrance is located on such land.

  Directions and Parking
----------------------

      About 20 mins walk

     Around 0.99 miles / 1.59 KM

Satnav: Blea Moor Rd, Carnforth, LA6 3AS

### Parking

There's plenty of places to park in the very obvious lay-bys. With it being a popular place for walkers, it's advised to get there early. Between 9AM and 9:30AM if you want a decent spot. As you approach, there's a lay-by on your left, I'd keep going and see if you can get a space closer to bridge – just makes for a shorter journey when you set off to the cave. Bring some cash for the burger and ice cream vans. There's no mobile signal whatsoever down there, so no card payments!

### Walking Directions

Finding the cave entrance is always more challenging than you think. You could walk across the land in the hope of finding it, but there's a slightly longer and much easier way. Just use the footpath which begins at the bridge / near the burger van. Follow this all the way along, past the viaduct and you'll notice the path continues into a small hill. You'll see the path change to cobble stones. This is your signal to turn right and walk across the grass. Keep going for about 100 meters or so and you'll come to a outcrop. It's slightly elevated up a mound, so it's hard to see. The pictures below should give you a good indication of where it is in relation to the viaduct.

#### Entrance 2 to Entrance 3

 [ Print ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/caves/roger-kirk-cave-entrance-2/routes/entrance-2-to-entrance-3/print)

**Please check the rainfall in the area before attempting this route. The route includes a tube/duck section that can become unpassable in heavy rain. Visit only after the weather has been dry for a few days.**

Once you find the entrance, the route is straightforward—there aren’t any real alternative routes. Follow the cave more or less as it leads you (use the directions and parking section for getting to the entrance).

As you progress, you’ll eventually reach the only choice point near the end:

\- **Optional exit via the 3rd entrance:** a short wet crawl, but it rewards you with a stunning view of the viaduct.

\- **Main exit via the 4th entrance:** an equally good view.

After a short walk, the cave quickly turns into crawling. This sets the character of most of the route—regular crawls alternating with periods of stooped walking. Not long after you begin, you’ll reach a **short, tight crawl**. It looks more intimidating than it is once you get down and see the far side.

Continue following the passage until you reach a section where you’ll need to angle your body like a **backslash “\\”** to get around it.

Further on, you’ll come to the **tube/duck section**. Depending on recent rainfall, it may be quite deep. It’s a short crawl—follow the route around to your left and enjoy a good soaking.

After that, you’ll be able to stand again following a short **sideways/backslash “\\”** move. From here, the cave improves: you’ll pass a few formations and some lovely colours in the walls.

Keep going and you’ll reach a wider chamber that’s ideal for a rest and photos. After this, the route enters a short traverse over a stream passage—use the stone to stay above the water. It’s roughly a **human-and-a-half deep** and looks difficult to get out of, so take care as you work your way through. It’s essentially careful crawling to pass the stream.

![Looking down the traverse at Roger Kirk Cave](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/eFtcbhnAIVKl4Jwhk3CnMUaLzmMATVZMlf5VA3Lt.webp)

Once past the traverse, the cave returns to a mix of stream walking/stooping with a few tighter sections, plus some decent (though small) formations.

Eventually you’ll see daylight. This is **not the end**, just a preview—you’re about **60% of the way through**. You can exit here, but otherwise continue. After a while, you’ll reach a section of wet crawling and possibly brief swimming; it doesn’t last long.

Follow the passage until you reach the **4th entrance/exit**. If you weren't wet enough already and want some more tight crawling, take the **right turn just before exiting**. Follow it to the end, it’s essentially a **hairpin left** with more crawling, before you finally reach the exit. Get your camera ready for a spectacular view of the viaduct.
