      About 5 mins walk

     Around 0.10 miles / 0.16 KM

Satnav: 54.19907, -2.5141 or drive from Cowan Bridge Carpark, Carnforth, LA6 2HS

### Parking

There's space for about 8 cars max, if you block a few people in. What's usually done is people meet up in Cowan Bridge car park or at St. Peters Church and car share. Just follow Leck Fell lane all the way up, past the cattle grid and gate and the parking spot is in a lay-by on the left hand side.

### Walking Directions

You're in for a treat as this is a really short walk from the car park. Walk back down Leck Fell Land for a few minutes and you'll find a large wooden gate on your left hand side. (Make sure to close it behind you!)

There's 2 routes to take, one is just straight ahead over a boggy patch and then its pretty much in front of you. The second is a well defined path to the right after the gate, I'd imagine this route is better in really bad weather, but either way it loops back round to the cave entrance. All in two very short routes to the same place. Nice and easy!

  #### Notes

7 hours underground in this beauty of a cave! Although not all of those hours were happy ones!

My first classic trip was to Lost Johns' Cave. I'd not been caving in the 2 months prior due to the kids' summer holidays and other commitments, so I was itching for some proper cave action and Lost John's did not disappoint!

Being a classic cave, meant it felt a fair bit more serious that the other caves I'd visited before. It felt more dangerous with its exposed drops in the ground that you had to traverse without a handline and the depth of the pitches, with the Valhalla pitch coming in at about 40 meters / 133ft.

The Battle axe traverse was also fantastic, a traverse across a 30m drop which extends down to 40m the further you get across. At some points I had to wedge my knees into the wall as there were no foot holds!

It's a very physical trip. Let me tell you, coming back up Valhalla with a rope bag isn't easy! You need to be physically fit if you're going all the way down to the final pitch.

On the way down we went the Centipede / Valhalla route and then down to the final pitch. On the way back we took an alternative route, up through Dome, Window, Cathedral and Vestry, which was arguably more difficult. 13 pitches in total were descended and ascended.

I made mention of some of those 7 hours not being happy, well they started getting horrible at the Cathedral pitch. It was a hanging rebelay which I managed to get myself into quite the pickle over.

I was already tired from going up pitches whilst carrying 2 rope bags and this pitch slapped me with a wet salmon! It was awkwardly rigged with the 2nd up rope extending out to the left, which made it really tricky to clip your chest ascender to, plus I now realise that the mistake I made was that I didn't unclip my foot ascender when trying to switch over! The foot ascender kept tension on the rope, which made my chest ascender bite down even harder on the rope, making it next to impossible to unclip!

Each time I tried to step up on my foot loop, the chest ascender kept moving up the rope, getting closer and closer to the anchor! Pair this with the other rope being at such a weird angle, both my arms and legs were at full stretch either side. With no ledge to rest on, my grip strength quickly failed and I let go of the ropes. It was a short fall, as luckily I had my cows tails clipped into the Y hang anchor. Those bad boys saved my life!

It took me 3 attempts to successfully get onto the other rope. There was a fair bit of swearing and lots of rest, but I eventually made it. After that I was completely exhausted. I had used up all my energy on that rebelay and the rest of the trip was an absolute slog!

### **What I wished I had known beforehand**

Apart from needing more experience on passing hanging rebelays, I wasn't prepared for how physical the trip was. I'm generally a pretty fit person, but all it took was 3 failed attempts at the Cathedral pitch to completely drain my tank. If I hadn't made those mistakes I would have been fine, tired, but fine.

I'm glad that it happened in a way, it's in making mistakes and failure where we learn the most. I learned not to go to Lost Johns again 😂.

All jokes aside, It was an incredible cave, the pitches down Centipede and Valhalla make it worth it. I just wouldn't do it again anytime soon.

#### Hammer

Approx Pitch Length: 5m

Hammer is a straight forward pitch. You've got a nice little ledge to attach onto the rope and it should be a comfortable descent. It's also a short pitch, probably about 4 or 5 meters.

  [ ![Lost Johns - Hammer pitch approach](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/186/conversions/01M49HYB6S41FNXAQ8B4Z5M7GS-thumb.webp) ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/186/conversions/01M49HYB6S41FNXAQ8B4Z5M7GS-optimised.webp)

#### Mud

Approx Pitch Length: 7m

Mud is another straight forward pitch. You're still in the passageway that curves round to the pitch head. It's a nice, easy approach and its about 6 - 7 meters down.

#### Centipede

Approx Pitch Length: 25m

A fine pitch with a huge formation of flow stone to your right hand side (if descending and facing the wall) around half way down. I wish i had stopped and increased the brightness of my headlamp as it didn't come out too well on my video (Check video tab).

I'm guessing it was about a 25 meter pitch, hard to tell really, but would make for hard work on the way back up!

Approaching the pitch and clipping in is straight forward, You've got room to stand and pull the rope in. Stepping off the ledge is a little daunting, especially if someone has descended already and you can see their head lamp at the bottom. It really gives some perspective as to how deep it is!

Overall, easy to descend, might be tiring on the way up though!

#### Centipede Video

#### Candle

Approx Pitch Length: 4m

Candle is the first rebelay pitch of the route (If going to Valhalla via Centipede). There's a small ledge you can sit on at the switchover point, however if you are carrying a rope / tackle bag, attach it to your harness and let it hang between your legs, instead of carrying it on your back. I had mine on my back which made it proper awkward to sit down on the ledge. There's a nice protruding wall on the left you can put your foot on to give you some balance too.

As far as rebelays go, it's not too bad at all. The pitch head is a little restricted, in that there was a somewhat deep puddle (just up to your lower shins) just before the edge. So its a little awkward to clip in, but nothing crazy.

It's a short pitch, probably 4-5 meters in total for both parts. Think of it as good practice!

#### Shistol

Approx Pitch Length: 3m

Shistol is super simple, only about 3 meters down and has a nice wide approach. Equally as easy to get back up too.

#### Battle Axe Traverse

Approx Pitch Length: 20m

The Battle Axe Traverse isn't really a pitch, but it deserves a place here as it's still SRT related. The approach is quite exposed, however there's plenty of space to sit down and wait your turn. Clipping your cowstails into the handline does feel a little sketchy cos you have to reach out with a big ol' drop right in front of you!

The traverse starts at a 30m drop and then 40m drop as you make your way across. I'd say it's moderately easy overall, you just need to take your time with your foot placements and switch your cowstails over at each anchor. There was one section, about half way through where there were no footholds whatsoever, so I had to resort to wedging my knees into the walls, there were also times where I had to just let my cowstails take my weight so that i could grab the handline further along (this was on the way back with a rope bag).

There's a resting point at the end, just before you move up to the Valhalla pitch, although it's uncomfortable and the footholds look very thin. Depending on how many people are in front of you, there might be a wait at this point. Although you can see people right at the bottom of the pitch from here, the view is good!

If you don't plan on doing the Valhalla pitch, it makes sense to turn back before you do the traverse. Going down Valhalla is amazing, coming back up it is hard work.

#### Valhalla

Approx Pitch Length: 40m

What a fantastic pitch! Coming in at 40m / 130ft drop, it's not for the faint hearted. Even the pitch head is super exposed.

Once you've got yourself comfortable at the pitch head, clipping in should be straight forward. What I did notice is that there's much more weight in the rope when attaching your descender, it really shows how much rope is being used here. Shuffling off the edge feels like a leap of faith and it's exhilarating.

On my trip there was 1 deviation that we had to pass, however the CNCC topo has it with 2 deviations, so your experience may vary. Coming down the deviation was a little awkward to get to, you're not coming down in a straight line, it's more in a downwards diagonal line, so getting close to the deviation with your descender becomes a bit of a faff, but nothing too challenging.

On the way back up I found it much more tricky to pass - mainly to do with the rope going off in that diagonal direction again. I had to really pull in hard on the deviation line to move my body closer to it so I could unclip and move it under my chest ascender and then again to get it past my Pantin / foot ascender. In hindsight, it might have helped me a lot if I just unclipped my Pantin first before I did anything else. It also must have taken a good 5 - 10 mins to get back up!

After you've got past the deviation, enjoy the view, the sound of the water crashing and just take it all in. An amazing experience!

#### Final Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 7m

The final pitch is not that far from Valhalla and requires a short climb using a handline, which was pretty fun! The pitch itself is a little more exposed than the others. The ledge stops short of the rope, so you'll need to sit against the left cave wall and use your feet to wedge yourself into the gap to clip in. There's a cascade off the side as you come down. A little bit of spray and obviously quite loud in there too.

You descend down to a small pool of water, however where you land you can keep dry as there is a raised part. After you're off the rope you can either just walk through the water, but it's pretty deep, easily knee deep. Or work your way round the edge on the right hand side.
