  Directions and Parking
----------------------

      About 15 mins walk

     Around 0.51 miles / 0.82 KM

      Satnav: Thornton Ln, Carnforth LA6 3PH - 54.196989, -2.457850

### Parking

There are two main spots to park: one just up from the walking start point, and one a bit further past the first parking spot. Each can hold about four cars. If they’re full, there are a few more along the way past **Braida Garth** (a farm)—not many people mention this when specifying the meeting point. The only drawback is that these parking spots are a decent walk from where you need to start.

Also, even though the meeting point is past the farm, don’t park on the grass verges near the road entrance to the farm.

 ### Walking Directions

The starting point is a short walk down from the first parking spot. There’s an obvious gap in the stone wall: it has a large rectangular perimeter with a metal gate providing access to the grassy hill. Walk up from here (it’s steeper than it looks) and use the stone wall as your reference—keep it on your left. I find using a clock face helpful: you’re aiming for **11 o’clock**, i.e., the top-left direction.

You’ll reach a crossing point. Hop over it and **Rowten Pot** will be right in front. Take a look, but be careful when approaching the entrance. Right next to the first crossing point there’s another one to your right—hop over the first, turn right, walk a few metres, and the next crossing point is right there.

Continue along, keeping note of the stone wall on your right side (on the map this is called **Turbary Road**). Follow it for about **300 metres**, then take a left turn up the hill. You may pass the **Aquamole Pot** entrance—if you do, you’re very close. Keep walking uphill until you reach the entrance to **Jingling Pot**. Look out for a scar in the ground with two trees growing out of one side of the entrance.

#### Little Gully - Lateral Cleft

 [ Print ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/caves/jingling-pot/routes/little-gully-lateral-cleft/print)

Jingling Pot is a great cave for practising and improving your SRT. There are three main routes down, and this description focuses on the Little Gully route through the Lateral Cleft. Jingling Pot is very much a down-and-back-up-again type of cave, as there’s nothing to explore once you reach the bottom.

After a short walk down into the gully, you’re straight into the SRT action. Clip into the handline and you’re at the first pitch: nice and simple, and not very long either — only about 3 metres. Once down, you get your first wow moment as the exposed shaft opens up below. First, you need to crawl along the short overhang. It’s wide enough for most people, but not wide enough to feel comfortable. Then you need to take a deep breath and find your footing along the alcove. At this point, it was squeaky-bum time for me, but the view down is incredible.

After a short traverse across, you’ll land on a ledge and the Lateral Cleft route begins. The pitches come thick and fast from here. The second pitch is another straightforward one, about 7 metres down and easy to descend. Once down, mind your step, as there’s a small hole in the ground. A few metres further on is the third pitch. You can sit down and attach your descender on this one. It also has a deviation about halfway down, which shouldn’t pose any problems.

The fourth pitch is another short one, before you reach the main event. The fifth pitch is on an exposed ledge. From here, you can look up and see daylight — a fine view, but the best views are at the bottom of the cave. Descending the fifth pitch is again straightforward, but the ascent can be tricky. Make sure you don’t come up too close to the top of the rope. I made that mistake and couldn’t get myself back down onto the ledge, which feels very exposed. I had to down-prusik to get to the right height so I could swing back onto the ledge. Panic briefly ensued, but training kicked in and saved the day.

Once at the bottom of the cave, get your phone or camera out and look up at the spectacular view. I even saw a frog down there. There is one more pitch, which can be rigged or free-climbed if you take the route on the right-hand side. I’d say it isn’t really worth doing, as there’s nothing more to explore apart from the digging site.

Overall, it’s a great SRT improver trip. If I go again, I’ll try the other route that starts at the traverse and is a rebelay all the way down to the bottom.

  #### Notes

Upon reading the rigging topo and route description for Jingling Pot, the exposed traverse had me a little bit anxious. That anxiety was confirmed after I got down the first pitch. It's just a big pit which you have to work your way across and then step down onto a really exposed wall. It does make for a great view however, you just have to be brave and you'll soon be across. On the way back I was much more confident and actually enjoyed it.

If i were to take the direct route down, which has a free hanging re-belay, it would have been a different story. Although if i ever do come back, I'm going to give it a try!

I gave this cave 4/5, because it's really good if you want to practice your SRT skills. It missed out on 5 starts because, there's nothing else to do once you get to the bottom, no real formations and no exploring. So once you're down, it's straight back up again!

### What I wish I'd known

The penultimate pitch, aka the main one down before you reach the bottom, it pretty exposed, It's fine on the way down, but on the way back up it can easily catch you out. A few people on the trip, including myself made the mistake of coming up too high on the rope on the ascent. If you're too high up, you won't have enough room to swing your backside onto the ledge. You'll need to down-prusik to bring yourself more in line with the ledge. The extra rope length gives you the ability to swing more.

If you don't know how to down-prusik, learn how to, or you might get yourself in a bit of a pickle!

  SRT Previews
------------

SRT Previews let you see what a pitch looks like before you enter the cave. **They are not rigging guides, and they are not a how-to. Never rely on them for rigging.** Always go with a competent person who knows how to rig a cave. If you need a rigging topo, use the [CNCC guide.](https://cncc.org.uk/cave/jingling-pot)

#### 1st Pitch - Via Little Gulley

Approx Pitch Length: 3m

A simple descent of about 3 - 4 meters. A short walk down from the starting point. Nice and easy with a decent ledge for you to attach your descender to. Shouldn't pose many problems.

#### Traverse to Lateral Cleft

Approx Pitch Length: 7m

This one might get your heart rate up. It's a very exposed traverse across the shaft into the Lateral Cleft. It starts with a short crawl under the overhang and then you emerge into an alcove where you can stand. It does require a bit of confidence given the spectacular if not daunting view down below. Once you've found your footing it does feel pretty comfortable. After this you can traverse over onto the ledge.

#### 2nd Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 7m

The 2nd pitch is only a few meters after the traverse and is another simple descent. Plenty of space to attach and straight down onto the next passage and very shortly afterwards the 3rd pitch.

[ ![Jingling Pot - Approach to the second pitch.](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/62/conversions/01KZ252E98YB52RFCSBT9S9T3D-thumb.webp) ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/62/conversions/01KZ252E98YB52RFCSBT9S9T3D-optimised.webp)

#### 3rd Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 9m

Another simple pitch, but this time with a deviation about halfway down. You can sit down on the ledge and attach your descender with relative comfort. Deviation should be straight forward. Bottom of the pitch has plenty of space to unclip. You're also not far away from the next pitch either.

[ ![Jingling Pot - Looking down at the third pitch](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/64/conversions/01KZ3X72SBPWWZKJF5KMKEWP65-thumb.webp) ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/64/conversions/01KZ3X72SBPWWZKJF5KMKEWP65-optimised.webp)

#### 4th Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 3m

The 4th pitch is a very short descent - about 3 meters. You've got a nice ledge to stand on to attach your descender in. Should be straight forward.

  [ ![Jingling Pot - Fourth pitch approach](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/66/conversions/01KZ438Q6TQWP6Y71QBADKCPR7-thumb.webp) ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/66/conversions/01KZ438Q6TQWP6Y71QBADKCPR7-optimised.webp)

#### 5th Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 20m

The 5th pitch one of the bigger ones on the trip. You'll notice that this one is quite exposed. You've got a ledge to stand on at least, but it's not as nice as the ones that came before. Descending is straight forward. However on the ascent, when you get near to the top of the pitch head, don't go up too close to the top of the rope. I made this mistake and found myself having to down prusik to get myself at the right height to sit on the ledge. If you go up too high you'll really struggle to sit yourself down. One to bear in mind!

Also don't forget to enjoy the view. When you reach the bottom you can take some fantastic photos!

  [ ![Jingling Pot - Fourth pitch view](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/67/conversions/01KZ43B7XASJ3GZ4ZY21RJW8AK-thumb.webp) ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/67/conversions/01KZ43B7XASJ3GZ4ZY21RJW8AK-optimised.webp)

#### Final Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 4m

The final pitch down to the digging site is another straightforward one. First, you need to bum-shuffle along the handline until you reach the pitch head. It’s a short drop to the bottom. There’s also an alternative route on the right-hand side of the approach, which can be free climbed, though it’s a bit tight in places. I took that route on the way back up, and it made a nice change from all the SRT. Unless you’re planning to have a look into the digging site, there’s not much point in doing this pitch, as it’s the end of the cave — unless, of course, you’re there to practise.
