Access No Restrictions Access Land (CRoW) refers to land where you have a right to roam on foot. In caving, this often means the entrance is located on such land.

### Parking

The approach to the car parking is along narrow, single lane roads, so be prepared to have to pull over or reverse back into a passing place. There's a large-ish lay-by right next to the cave, which holds about 9 - 10 cars depending on size. And it's a really short walk to the cave entrance, bonus!

### Walking Directions

To avoid any confusion, I’m assuming you’re starting from the car park. Take the obvious path to your left and follow it along the main road. It’s only a very short walk along the riverbed. Early on, there’s a rough path down to the top of the cave entrance, but don’t take it. You’d have to descend a steep, wet hill, which is slippery and could easily send you over on your backside, so it isn’t worth it.

Instead, continue a little further. You’ll pass what looks like a small bridge made of tree roots, before an obvious path down to the riverbed appears on your left. Simply walk up the riverbed and you’ll be greeted by a great view of the cave entrance, just above the pool of water, depending on the weather. When I last visited, it was covered in debris and absolutely midge-infested. Oh, and did I mention the spiders at the entrance? Hahaha.

#### Main Chamber

 [ Print ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/caves/ibbeth-peril-cave-1/routes/main-chamber/print)

It was a fine summers day, a little bit of a scorcher you might say. Which apparently was very good if you wanted to get into the cave. In wetter weather the entrance can be unsafe to reach or even completely flooded!

With a short walk from the car park along a dirt path and then a short climb down into one very dry River Dee. Quite the view, a short walk along the stones and pebbles and you arrive at a deep pool with the entrance mostly covered in twigs and leaves. It's worth a picture here, really beautiful scenery.

The entrance was covered with purpose built wooden cover - which is used to stop debris getting into the entrance. The number of midges was borderline hazardous, a quick entrance was needed. Don't mind the spiders and their hanging egg sacks on the left hand side as you come in, they look worse than they are and are easily avoided.

After a little bit of a crawl, we arrived and a nice pool, with ripples constantly forming, quite mesmerising! After a short walk on, you get to the beginning of the main chamber as it opens out a bit, you're not at the main attraction yet, so keep moving on until it opens up into a massive chamber. Your head lamps struggle to light the place up with the size of it!

There is a fantastic and huge formation at your 10 o'clock as you come in, you'll need to traverse some large boulders to get there first mind. Once we'd had our fill of formations, we decided to head over to well photographed stream passage.

There's like a ledge at the back of the cavern which has a few ways you get up upon, we decided to walk to the far right hand side of the cavern and take the least sketchy looking route up. Once up, it's a short crawl to a until you reach a small chamber with a nice rock pool and cascade. It's an easy climb up into the stream passage. Which goes on for a good stretch and the ceiling gets progressively lower the further you go in.

There's a few ceiling formations along the way. Wildly there was a lifeform growing out of the sandy gravel. It looked like a shoot of a plant, but with no light in there, it raised the question of whether it could be some sort of fungus instead?

After this we decided to have a mooch in the "Upstream part of the upstream, downstream passage" I hope I've got the right, sorry John if you ever read this!

To get there, we went back out the way we came from the stream passage and on the way down from the ledge you can take a left into the boulders and you'll come out at a nice pit which is about 3m down. We decided to rig a handline for this one, but it can be free climbed, it's just a bit awkward knowing where to put your feet when you slide down. There's also an alternative route down on the left hand side, which I took on the way back up and it seemed easier.

The path split off into two passages: Main flow, with a comical "sphincter passage" and the outlet passage / flood overflow. I had a nosey in the latter. It was quite slick in there with two fairly steep drops which if it were wetter would have proved a right PITA to get out of. There wasn't much to see here other than the route sumps out.

I then had a look in the main flow, pretty tight in there hence the sphincter passage name. I believe you can push this into other parts of the cave, but its often covered in silt and water, which makes for a somewhat dangerous trip. Not one we were interested in this time!

After this it was time to leave, nice and easy to get back out and with a great view of the pool and streambed as you exit the cave.
