  Directions and Parking
----------------------

      About 10 mins walk

     Around 0.39 miles / 0.62 KM

Satnav: 54.2035011, -2.5052573 or drive from Cowan Bridge Carpark, Carnforth, LA6 2HS

### Parking

There's space for about 8 - 9 cars (size depending) at the verge. What generally tends to happen is you'll meet at Cowan Bridge Carpark (about 10 minutes drive back from the cave parking spot) and car share with someone.

The approach is the same whether you're coming from the car park or just driving straight there. Go under the bridge and continue all the way up Leck Fell Lane. It's mostly a single lane road, so take care. The road curves off right onto Church Lane, but just continue straight on. Go past a few houses on your left and you'll eventually see a farm. Not long after this is a sharp right hand corner. Drive slow here as it's a bit of a blind corner, and then skillfully dodge the potholes not long after.

Keep going for what feels like an eternity and you'll come to a cattle grid, pass this and keep on going some more. You'll eventually get to the layby on the left of the road.

### Walking Directions

Walking to Gavel Pot is easy. From the parking spot, looking down onto the fell you'll see a stone wall to your right. If you imagine a clock face, you want to go in the direction of 11 o'clock. Keeping the stone wall to your right as your reference point. You'll walk past a few craters in the ground until you come to a triangular fenced off area with a few trees. It really stands out, so its hard to miss.

There's a wooden step and post to help you climb over. Follow the obvious path across and down to your left. Take care here as it gets pretty steep. There's an eyelet a little way down if you want to run a handline. It's a very pretty cave entrance, the scent of wild garlic fills the air! As you come down the steep path you'll be met with a fork off to your left, this looks down onto Short Drop Pot (you can't enter from here). Carry on past this and you'll see the obvious end to the path and a rigging point to get down. Again exercise caution here, the path is narrow.

Once you're down the first pitch, follow the path down until the second pitch near the right hand side. Enjoy!

  Route Descriptions

#### Glasfurd's Chamber

 [ Print ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/caves/gavel-pot/routes/glasfurds-chamber/print)

A fantastic route that has a bit of everything. Please see the parking and directions section for information on how to find the cave.

Gavel's hole is immense. Reminds me a bit of Gordale Scar. So we entered over the stile and began a narrow path descent towards the first daylight pitch. To be safe we did rig a handline part way down the path. So care needs to be taken.

On the left you pass a cave entrance with a big drop and the sound of running water. This Short Drop cave but I'm not sure anyone ever goes that way as the entrance/exit depending on which way you go is at the bottom of the first Gavel daylight pitch. At the bottom of the first daylight pitch facing the rock face Short Drop Cave is to the left. A short passage with a climb up over a boulder you soon come to the main Short Drop streamway and daylight can be seen from the hole above that you passed walking down to the first pitch. Without rigging a traverse line one can't go any further and so a quick return back to Gavel.

The underground entrance to Gavel is a small walk down the slope to the right hand corner jumble of rocks. A scramble through the small hole using a rigged rope is useful and a must for the rigger for safety as they have to straddle to fix the 'y' hang for the 6 metre SRT descent. The top of this little pitch can be awkward to reach with the cowstails. The knack is to go to the very edge of the drop which feels a little exposed. However, for safety you should have your descender clipped on before doing this and then one can straddle across and clip the cowstails on. Once safe the usual procedure for swopping the descender to the other rope to descend.

![Gavel Pot - Approach to second pitch](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/Xnq0b18WaeK8wB0C2hl4wjWs19Z798jupRaKLW6g.jpg)

At the bottom of this first underground pitch is a another small downwad slope which reaches a scaffold climb down. This can be rigged as well for use with the descender but it is climbable. This then drops into the main passage with a shallow stream over large shingle. If just visiting Glasfurd's the SRT gear can be discarded at this point.

A bit of upright walking soon lowers to hands and knees over the large pebbles and wet shingle flooring reaching an upright chamber with a shelf on the right. This is the way to the October Series.

![Gavel Pot - Flowstone formation to October Series](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/Svm8ZTaLlBBHyd1yHQdrrkac03jNx2SoJqlqZX3P.jpg)

Continue following the stream passage and look for another shelf on the right. If you reach a left hand bend in the main passage you've gone too far. However, at this bend there is a shelf higher up on the right and this does lead to Glasfurd's but it is awkward and so one needs to go back upstream a few yards and the easy climb up will now on your left. It all makes sense when you climb up this.

![Gavel Pot - 2m muddy climb up](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/storage/e2vuaUhsJpMyKqo6p4ikdQRApC8BEd7DcI34hi5p.jpg)

Going left takes you back to the main stream passage and the awkward climb you've hopefully ignored. Turning right takes you to Glasfurd's through a wriggly crawling passage that doesn't last long leading to an easy climb down into a large passage/chamber with a way on to the right to Glasfurd's, this passes a rope on the left disappearing up into the void. The passage soon closes down.

Glasfurd's formations are a series of small chambers connected by flat out crawls best done head first on one's back with one's head sideways. They are easier than they look because there is room when part way through to use one's arms against the rock face to assist dragging the body through. Not long crawls at all – just like a body length if that. Large cavers will struggle and small cavers have the advantage. Exiting these chambers on the way back is easier due to them sloping down and Mr. Gravity helping. Feet first this time on the back soon makes short work of them. Your soon back in the large passage passing the rope now on your right.

Exiting the reverse route is easy enough. Getting back to the larger chamber the exit passage small climb up is on the right before the rope. Then it's back through the small wriggly bit and keep left to drop back down into the main passage and obviously turn left upstream. If you miss the turn left you'll come to a small stalagmite boss and the awkward climb down over looking the main passage on the bend. Just turn around it's only a few feet back from where you came. Upstream, to collect your SRT gear. Up the scaffold climb to the slope up to the small exit pitch.

  SRT Previews
------------

SRT Previews let you see what a pitch looks like before you enter the cave. **They are not rigging guides, and they are not a how-to. Never rely on them for rigging.** Always go with a competent person who knows how to rig a cave. If you need a rigging topo, use the [CNCC guide.](https://cncc.org.uk/cave/gavel-pot)

#### Gavel Pot 1st Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 8m

The first pitch is fairly straight forward. Depending on how its been rigged, you might have a deviation which helps with the rope rub. If there's no deviation, there are a few ways you can approach the edge. One is to get on your knees and slowly lower yourself down. The edge is a bit of an overhang, so if you go down on your knee's you'll be better able to pass this bit without hurting yourself.

The other method is just to push your legs out and rappel down. It depends on the thickness of the rope. When I attempted it, we had a thick, slow rope so using the "on the knees" method worked best.

On the way up, you'll find that your hand ascender might get pinned into the wall when you reach the ledge. Simply go on your knees or stand up / push your legs against the wall to give yourself some room to move it past freely.

#### Gavel Pot 2nd Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 6m

There are two sections to the second pitch. The first section is free climbable, with it being mainly rocks and scaffolding, however you should absolutely go down on your descender as the second section leads to an slightly exposed drop down.

Once you get to the pitch head on the second section, it can be a little bit awkward to clip into the second rope. A long (long) cowstail helps here. You can stand right at the edge of the ledge to get close enough. After you've clipped onto the second rope, its a simple descent down.

On the way back up it's technically a rebelay, just use the edge to stand on and clip your cowstails into the anchors and the up rope. I found it easier on the way up vs coming down.

#### Gavel Pot 3rd Pitch

Approx Pitch Length: 15m

Only a few meters away from the 2nd pitch is the 3rd pitch. It's mainly scaffolding and it does get a bit tight near the bottom, but overall nothing too challenging.

There's no more pitches for a while after this point, so you could choose to remove your harnesses here if you're not doing anymore SRT.

On the way up, it's worth clipping in your hand ascender, but you can free climb this one, again the start is a bit tight, but after this it's generally fine.
