### Parking

Please take care on the single track road on the way to the farm, there's a few blind summits and corners. Slow driving is recommended. Once you've you got to the end of the road, it should become obvious where you can park. There are gravel / grass verges on the either side on the approach to Red Rose. It can get very busy here so you might have to reverse back and take a left and see if there's any space there instead. Please see the yellow areas marked on the map below for ideal parking spaces.

 ### Walking Route

A pleasant walk when the sun has got it's hat on, quite the opposite when its wet and windy! The walk to the cave is mostly uphill and undulating in places.

Once you've got to the top of the path from Red Rose, there is an abandoned horse box, take a right here on the somewhat obvious path and follow it up and down. You'll eventually get to a fence with a step you can use to hop over. Follow the fence down and once you get to the end, you'll see a valley with the Ease Gill stream (weather dependant). The path takes a hard left down a steep, but manageable slope. Only a few meters from this is the iron cover to the entrance of County Pot on the left, in the rocks.

If the weather is good you can cross the river bed onto the other side, although in the route i've plotted on the map you could keep walking past county pot and up to wretched rabbit and cut across the stream bed there instead. It's pretty much in that direction, up the stream bank and over a few small mounds.

If its not dry, the river can get pretty wild, if this is the case, as you come down the hill towards County Pot, there is a small footbridge - look for "Cow Dub" on the map (zoom in near County Pot), which you can use to cross over safely.

  Route Descriptions
------------------

#### Main Route

 [ Print ](https://www.caveinfo.co.uk/caves/bank-holiday-hole/routes/main-route/print)

A short trip that can be done in about 30 - 40 minutes. A decent amount of tight crawling, a bit of water (weather dependant) and some nice formations along the way.

Located not far from Wretched Rabbit, Bank Holiday Hole is your typical hole in the ground type cave. A short climb down and you're straight into the action. The path offers you a choice between left and right, with both being short and leading the the same place, a tighter crawl!

It's only short and at the end you're met with a nice puddle to crawl down into. After this point its a mix of walking and some crawling. You're still short on space though. The stream passages are quite narrow. A good rule in here is to just follow the stream. If there's water, that's the way.

After you've done some walking, you'll come to a junction, follow the stream passage round to the left and not long after that you'll be greeted by a huge flowstone curtain with some pretties on the ceiling too. It's tight getting past this, as you have to brush up past the flowstone. Care needed!

There's some more ceiling formations if you carry on too. The next part was more crawling, but not flat out, bit of water as well, so expect the hands and knees to get wet. Unless you're like me who's more akin to a cat - I always try my best to keep dry!

There were some points you could stand up at, but they were often short lived. Simon who was on trip decided to go ahead and scope the area out. We heard muffled shouting saying it just got too tight to continue and at that point it was time to turn around and head out.

On the way back there's a great photo opportunity to snap the flowstone curtain from the otherside. The stream passage kinda lines up in a way where you can get the right shot.

  #### Notes

A nice, short cave that isn’t listed on the CNCC - I wonder why? It’s really close to Wretched Rabbit, so it’s worth walking that little bit further to scope it out.

I actually lost my headlamp on the walk over and realised just before we were about to go in. Luckily, Sarah had a spare to lend me. The trip must go on! If you find a Fenix HM70R, you’re welcome to it!

There’s a short drop down the entrance hole, followed by a little shuffling forward, and then you’re straight into crawling—which quickly becomes flat-out crawling. I love a good tight crawl, and this cave didn’t disappoint! It’s not mega-tight, but it’s decent.

After the tight sections, there’s a small drop down into a nice puddle. Bonus points if you can keep your hands dry. After that, you can stand up, but you’re not exactly blessed with space—it’s still pretty tight.

Following the stream passage, you’ll come across some lovely formations. The first one is nice; the second is spectacular. It’s a large flowstone column, so make sure you look up—the ceiling is white!

Also, if you’ve got a ghetto booty, it’s going to be a tight squeeze getting past it, so be careful! There’s more crawling and more water in the passages that follow, so you’re going to get we**t**.

On our trip, the passage eventually petered out, so it was time to turn back.

### What I Wish I’d Known

This cave was quite physical. With all the crawling and shifting around in the tight passages, it requires a fair bit of energy.

If you’re planning to do Wretched Rabbit, I’d recommend doing Bank Holiday Hole first so you can have a rest before tackling the four ropes down—and back up. You can also easily spend three or four hours or more in Wretched Rabbit, and the walk back to the car park is already a beast.

### Would I go again?

Absolutely! Even though its a short cave, the tight crawls just tick the box for me. I also wonder if we could push the point at which we turned back. Sometimes the water levels dictate how far you can go. Maybe on a hot summers day we might be able to go further?
